If you are on the internet for any length of time, you are probably familare with the word "cloud computing". Cloud computing is defined on wikipedia as a "style of computing in which dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet."
What this ususally means, is that instead of keeping software/files on one server, or computer (your home computer for example) you place them across multiple servers, which can then work together to give you higher performance and a more reliable or scalable service.
The way things are going, within 5 years, you may not be buying windows and putting it on your computer. You may be just going to an address, and it loads your desktop.
This could make virus's a thing of the past, as well as data loss from hard drives, updates to software and operating systems. There are a great deal of good points.
Some are less clear, gaming for example could be more difficult as you would not be able to run a high level 3d game from a remote connection/operating system. I am sure at some level, there will always be local software running.
As you may know, www.LogicUL.com is hosted on a grid hosting enviornment. This allows us to sleep at night knowing that the millions of loyals fans and clients of Logic Unlimited can and will always be able to access our website. Okay that may have been a little embeleshed, but our site continues to grow in popularity as I continue to sharpen our SEO efforts.
The end result is, that while the server side of the IT world is already moving towards the cloud, home users are not that far away. Most likely this will be a gradual change, and one that is not highly visible to the end user, until your internet goes down and you can not boot your pc.
