How to choose a Great Domain Name.
Written by Daniel Longieliere

Choosing a domain name is one of the first, and possibly the most important step to the creation of a successful website. Problem is, its just not that easy.

There is a great deal of thought that needs to go into deciding on a domain name. Most studies of late show that people respond better to "Brands" i.e. Google, or Microsofts new search engine "Bing", "Twitter" etc. However, if you go this route, you miss out on the search engine optimization advantages of a name like "CheapWebDesign.com". search engines place alot of weight on whether or not a keyword is in your domain name, so going for the brand recognition is the harder road to follow, but often pays off in the long run.

Take for example our site. www.logicul.com. Here is how I landed on it.

Originally, we owned www.logicUnlimited.net, it was nice, but logicunlimited.com was taken, so I just went with that. It did not take long for me to get tired of the longer domain name, and it being a ".net" just wasnt as professional as i was aiming for.

So i went on the hunt for a new domain name. I had a few prospects, I contacted the owner of Logic Unlimited.com who refused to consider a sell (his site is about 10 years since its last update, and well... it's dated) So that was out, no way to convince him to let it go. So i was looking at Logic Unlimited, our business name, and thought, why not abbreviate unlimited. Now the correct abbreviation for unlimited should be ultd I believe, but that would be logicultd.com and it puts the word "cult" directly into the middle of our domain name. Not really what I was going for. Then I took a look at LogicUL.com. Not bad, its catchy, and shorter, I am going to have to work harder to get it optimized for google because of no keywords, but its actually closer to a potential brand if later on I wanted to change the name of the business to Logicul. But for not, as Our LLC is registered under Logic Unlimited, It is what it is.

The idea is to really take some time. Do not spend 2 months deciding on other aspects of your business, and 2 hours on what domain name to go with.
